Things you’d like to change can change faster than you think. There is a sort of intellectual prejudice – of which I’m sure I’ve been guilty myself – that just because fist-pumping, affirmation-spouting motivational gurus offering quick fixes have so little to offer, real progress must therefore always be painful and slow. But self-help quick fixes are bogus because they are shallow. Not because change can’t happen fast. If you’re willing and able to get deep and honest about why you do the counterproductive, happiness-limiting things you do, there’s no automatic reason why it might not be possible to walk away from them today.
