much of what you doggedly spend your life pursuing — success, romantic love, fame, validation, a hot body, wealth — are just poor stand-ins for what you actually need: an acceptance that life is suffering, you are deeply imperfect, and the true work of being here is learning how to be kind to yourself, and then extending that same kindness to others.
