TikTok's algorithms make identity itself seem diagnosable, a condition that is attributed rather than self-consciously constructed. At the same time, social media platforms incentivize self-expression, grounding the idea that identity is a form of capital that we are required to nurture and grow. The self becomes a perpetual contradiction, a problem to solve through posting and consuming, through interacting with oracular algorithms and interpreting engagement as certification of normalcy.
